First on the agenda this week is our review of CoastalBean.com‘s Himalayan Nepal coffee.  The results:sherpa-coffee

Todd: not in love with it.  Scott: Not bad, but doesn’t knock him over.

We’ll give that two CoffeeCast.fm thumb’s down.  Sorry, coffee picking sherpas.

Todd did take a sneak preview of the Malawi, and I’m drinking a cup as I write this.  Thinks are looking up for sure. Check in next week when we review the Malawi coffee in earnest.

Also from CoastalBean was a surprise treat, a rum cake. Best. Rum. Cake. Ever. ’nuff said.

Somehow we manage to get back talking about the siphon pot, but it is a fascinating device. OK, ok, we know we’re pushing it. We’ll back off a little. However, next time Scott should have his new siphon pot. But it’ll be a stovetop and we’ll have some new learnings and comparisons.

That’s not all we discuss. Give ‘er a listen.

Next week…

  • Scott will be in the same city as Todd, hopefully we’ll have some shenanigans to report on.
  • Malawi Coffee Review
  • Hopefully a special guest.

Thanks again to Coastal Bean for the coffee!  And thanks for listening…

latte, pain au chocolate, and wifi. woot!We don’t let colds and kids keep us away from talking about our favorite beverage. It’s friday and here’s our third show, right on time.

Please bear with Todd’s bad microphone cord for one more week please. He promises to get a new one.

Today we talk about…

  • Siphon Pot follow-ups and failures.
  • Flame or stovetop? Does Scott buy a stovetop Siphon Pot? Or one that works on a burner? Todd advocates for form (and portability) over function
  • The Great Kettle Debate. Is a stovetop kettle faster than an electric kettle? Turns out electric is faster, here are my numbers with 4 cups of water and a cold start. 3:46 electric; 5:33 stovetop. Clear winner is electric. Scott’s pot is Russell Hobbs (link)
  • We have our first official coffeecast.fm coast-to-coast coffee tasting. Tanzania Peaberry sent to us from CoastalBeans.com. Todd and Scott agree: It’s smooth, not very acidic. Very nice. (Thanks coastalbeans.com!) Next week we’ll review the Himalayan Nepal.
  • Coffee Tasting vs. Wine Tasting. Applying the Gary Vaynerchuk method.
  • Announcing our new CoffeeCast.fm “corporate office”, Coffee Karma, and latte art!

Thanks for listening. We’ve been trying to keep the shows fairly short. Of course we could go on for hours. How’s 30-40 minutes working for you?

Please post your comments/questions/feedback below, contact us on twitter, or email us at coffeecast (at) coffeecast dot fm.

And of course, thanks again to CoastalBeans.com for the coffee!

In the second episode we go through Todd’s ritualistic coffee making activities with the siphon pot (aka syphon pot or vacuum pot).

Read about Todd’s Hario Siphon pot on his blog and see the pictures over on the right.

And here’s a video of the halogen bulb driven siphon pots that we discussed.

If you don’t want to head out and pick up a siphon pot after this show, you might want to check your pulse. Or at least get yourself a double espresso stat!

CoffeeCast #1: Introducing the Coffee Odd Couple

The CoffeeCast is a weekly podcast featuring the Coffee love and expertise (or lack thereof, respectively) of Todd Crawford and Scott Jangro.

Get introduced to your hosts as we go way back to our first cups of instant and Mr. Coffee brew. We bring it to the present with our coffee drinking habits, when we drink coffee, what kind, and where we buy it.

Bottom line, Scott drinks anything, Todd drinks only the “good stuff”, 7 or higher, whatever that means.  Let’s find out.

It’s East meets West (coasts), utilitarian coffee drinker meets coffee snob as we set the stage and get this show kicked off.

Whether you’re a connoisseur or just love a great cup o’ Joe, there’s plenty for you here as we kick off our coffee journey on the CoffeeCast.
