CoffeeCast #1: Introducing the Coffee Odd Couple

The CoffeeCast is a weekly podcast featuring the Coffee love and expertise (or lack thereof, respectively) of Todd Crawford and Scott Jangro.

Get introduced to your hosts as we go way back to our first cups of instant and Mr. Coffee brew. We bring it to the present with our coffee drinking habits, when we drink coffee, what kind, and where we buy it.

Bottom line, Scott drinks anything, Todd drinks only the “good stuff”, 7 or higher, whatever that means. Let’s find out.

It’s East meets West (coasts), utilitarian coffee drinker meets coffee snob as we set the stage and get this show kicked off.

Whether you’re a connoisseur or just love a great cup o’ Joe, there’s plenty for you here as we kick off our coffee journey on the CoffeeCast.

I actually drank tea until I had my 3rd baby. He was a night person and the other 2 were day people. I then had to live on coffee for his first year or so.

I love Starbucks Cinnamon Dolce Latte when I am around one, and have a couple K cups of Gloria Jeans French Vanilla Supreme each morning. I never needed coffee to get going, but now I rarely start my day without it.

6 lisa picarille 02.20.09 at 5:53 pm: i have so many wonderful coffee memories. mom put ice cubes in hers (also brewed in the mr. coffee). dad used to head to the town donut shop for a coffee every day. he and his pals would chat for hours. when i was really young i used to beg him to bring me along. i would drink hot chocolate and feel grown up hanging with dad. i got to be the princess. like scott, my grandma drank sanka.

i love the ritual of coffee. but about 8 years ago i gave it up completely – no decaf even. i had a headache for a month, but after that faded, i still missed the ritual and routine of it so much that i only lasted about 1 year. it was like the death of a friend.

now, i wake and brew a pot. drink it all before noon. then my hubby and i go to get coffee (drive) every afternoon at peet’s. that one is usually an iced latte.. btw: i also live across the street from one of the most revered coffee roasters and cafes in san francisco and tend to wander over there as well. usually at 8pm or so, i’ll break out the french press for the final cup of the day.

anyway, the point is i love coffee. and i love this podcast. great job.
7 Joe Sousa 02.20.09 at 5:54 pm: Can’t say I am with you guys on this one. I HATE coffee. I hate the taste, hate the smell, and hate Starbucks (mostly because Howard Schultz sold the SuperSonics to those thieves from OKC). For years I have had people try to slip me desserts that have some coffee in them and say “you can’t taste it” but I always taste it and gag.

I know I am in the minority on this one. But I still listened!!!

9 Ed Byerly 02.20.09 at 6:18 pm: I’m a coffee lover from way back. Before espresso shops were prolific I used to drive twenty miles one-way to Portland twice a day for a cappuccino. In those days the only cup of Starbucks you could find was the complimentary house blend on Horizon Airlines flights.
And that old boiler tank espresso maker served me well for several years until I finally bought the Krups pumper that I admired for so long.
10 todd 02.20.09 at 6:19 pm: Point of clarification – I think Scott and I meant condensed milk when we were discussing evaporated milk…not sure what the differences are though.
11 Joe Sousa 02.20.09 at 6:27 pm: The only full cup of coffee I have actually been able to finish was when I was on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. I was in someone hut and they served it so I was obligated to drink it and I will say it was better than any other coffee I have tasted.

The beans were grown on the hills around the village and they dry it in on the paths with dogs, chickens, kids, cars, bikes, etc. trampling over it (think about that when you pay $8 a lb for Sulawesi coffee in Starbucks) and then they roast it over the fire right in their kitchens. And they don’t have filters so there was a lot of grounds in the coffee as you are drinking.
12 Deborah aka Loxly 02.20.09 at 6:33 pm: The difference between condensed milk and evaporated is that condensed has the sugar in it and evaporated has most of the water removed to make it last longer and be able to be stored in a can on the shelf.

Re: Condensed milk (the heavy, sweet stuff), I saw a prog on the food network where in south america they boil cans of evaporated milk in hot water for hours, and it turns into caramel.

Then they pour the mixture over fresh fruit and enjoy…

I don’t yet have the time (or motivation) to go through that yet, but that would be a nice thing to have.

The other thing that is easy to make is cappucino gratinas.
Freeze coffee in a bowl and take it out, scrape it with a spoon and eat the coffee slush thing (or just load it into a margarita maker if you have one.

15 scott 02.21.09 at 6:43 am: re: condensed vs. evaporated milk. I’m pretty sure it was evaporated milk that my step-father drank in his coffee. It was kept on the shelf in a can. But I could be wrong. Doesn’t really matter.

What does matter, confirmed by a quick google search, is that the Thai and Vietnamese coffee drinks are made with sweetened condensed milk.

@ed 84 miles a day to drink a few capuccinos. That is a coffee lover!

@lisa, you’re right, it is a ritual. It’s a pretty special thing. And I love that the Sanka reference struck a chord with so many.

After a few weeks of buying your coffee there every day you don’t even have to tell them how you like it – they learn. As Peter Fig learned many many years ago, don’t mess with me if I haven’t had my coffee – it ain’t pretty.
19 CharPaula 02.21.09 at 12:51 pm: Very much enjoyed the first podcast. Brought back a lot of memories – my grandparents always drank coffee with canned milk. My mom always trying to get me to drink Sanka…. bleh. Every morning the aroma of the coffee perking – in a percolator! Set in their ways it was very hard to get my parents to give up that old percolator… but they grew to love the first drip coffeemaker – the original white Mr. Coffee.

22 StephARC 02.22.09 at 2:21 am: I love leche condesada I used to drink it in CR all the time by itself! Maybe I should add it to my coffee. Like Scott I drink what is available there’s a little cafeteria by the office where Olga makes some pretty good cortaditos. Normally I drink coffee when I wake up earlier than normal or am feeling tired. I make my coffee sweet by adding french vanilla creamer or vanilla soymilk and splenda. I look forward to learning more and perhaps becoming a coffee snob like Todd.

Enjoyed what I heard though. I'm awaiting the delivery of my Jura Capresso Superautomatic . Breakeven on Starbucks replacement is calculated at just over a year.

27 Steve_Kirstein 02.23.09 at 9:37 pm: It's replacing another machine which I bought while still at Be Free. It worked out well and, while I would still occasionally go to SBUX or whatever, I enjoyed that level of coffee (all the varieties of things from espressos to standard cups to lattes/capps etc at home, so your consumption definitely goes up. But you also can grind decaf or a mix of beans on a per-cup basis, so it's nice that way.
